Does the Treasurer decide the Budget on their own?
Thanks for your question, Edward.
Although the Treasurer has responsibility for the Budget – the Australian Government's annual statement of how it plans to collect and spend money – they do not decide it on their own.
The Budget is a collective decision of the Cabinet – the Prime Minister and other senior ministers. The Cabinet is the main decision-making group in the government.
The Treasurer presents the Budget to Parliament and is responsible for explaining it and answering questions about it. The Budget must be considered and passed by the Senate and House of Representatives (like other proposed laws) and it is closely examined by members of parliament.
