The longest serving member of the Australian Parliament was William 'Billy' Morris Hughes.
Hughes was a member of the federal parliament for 51 years and 7 months. He joined the very first parliament after Federation in 1901 and served until his death in 1952. During that time, he represented several different electorates across New South Wales and Victoria. Hughes became the seventh Prime Minister, leading Australia from 1915 - during World War I - until 1923. Throughout his political career he was a member of 6 different parties, having founded 3 of them. Hughes was active in Australian politics in the first half of the 20th century.
Mr Hughes was also the oldest person to be a member of the Australian Parliament. He was 90 years and one month old when he died on 28 October 1952, while still serving in the House of Representatives.
