Where can I find out what my representatives have said about a new law in Parliament?
Hi, thanks for your question.
The best place to find speeches from the Australian Parliament is by using the ParlInfo search function on the Australian Parliament House website. ParlInfo allows you to search for documents from a number of sources including Hansard. Hansard is the written record of what was said in the parliament, including all speeches on bills.
You can use Hansard to find out:
- the reasoning behind the proposed new law. This is usually explained in the ‘second reading speech’ given by the member of parliament who introduced the bill.
- what members of parliament thought the impact of the new law would be
- what members of parliament said about why they were voting for or against the proposed law.
