What is the average salary of the prime minister and government ministers and why are they paid more than other members of parliament?
The Department of Finance has information about the salary of all members of parliament including the prime minister and government ministers.
These salaries are determined by the Remuneration Tribunal. The tribunal is an independent committee which makes recommendations on parliamentary salaries to the Australian Parliament.
Ministers receive a higher salary than other members of parliament because of their additional responsibilities. Ministers are allocated an area of responsibility in governing – running – Australia. This area of responsibility is known as a portfolio. Some examples of ministerial portfolios include health, environment, education, defence and immigration.
