Is there anything special about the flags flown in the House of Representatives and the Senate?
Hi, thanks for your question.
Yes, there are a few unique things about the flags flown at Parliament House!
The flags in the House of Representatives and Senate are replaced regularly. At the side entrances to the House of Representatives, the Australian National Flag, the Australian Aboriginal Flag and the Torres Strait Islander Flag are flown. These 3 flags are also flown in the Senate on both sides of the President of the Senate’s chair. Once these flags have been used in the Senate and House, they are given to senators and members of the House who donate them to schools or other community groups in their state, territory or electorate.
In the House of Representatives there are also 4 Australian National Flags permanently mounted high up in each corner of the room.
And of course, there’s one more flag that deserves a mention – the very large Australian flag flying above Parliament House on the 81-metre flag mast. This flag weighs 22 kilograms!
