Do any people live in parliament house?
Thanks for this question, Liam.
No, no one lives in Australian Parliament House. The building is a workplace where elected representatives of the Australian people meet to make decisions that shape the nation. Parliament House is also a site for national events such as celebrations, memorials and sometimes protests. Above all, it is a building for the people.
Parliament House includes offices and meeting spaces for elected representatives and their staff but does not have places for people to live. Senators and members who travel away from home to sit – meet – in Parliament arrange their own places to stay. The Prime Minister lives at The Lodge, their official residence in Canberra.
When Parliament is sitting – between 14 to 20 weeks each year – as many as 5000 people work in the building. This includes parliamentary officers and public servants, as well as members of parliament and their staff.
