How many rooms are there in Parliament House?

Thanks for your question, Maree.

Australian Parliament House has around 4,500 rooms. The building needs so many rooms because it supports the work of Parliament, thousands of staff and more than a million visitors each year.

The two main houses of parliament – the Senate and the House of Representatives – are included in this number. There are offices for members of parliament, their staff and the many people who help Parliament do its work. There are also many meeting and committee rooms where important discussions and decisions take place.

When Parliament is sitting – meeting – between 4000 and 5000 people work in the building so there are facilities to support everyone who works there. These include a childcare centre, gym, pool, bank, cafes and a meditation room.

Description

This photo shows a committee hearing taking place at Australian Parliament House. Members of parliament and people giving evidence to the committee are sitting at desks set up in a large rectangle. They each have a microphone to broadcast and record what they are saying. At the desks, most people have stacks of papers and some have laptops. There are people sitting in 2 rows of chairs set to the side of the rectangle of desks. These people are observing what is happening in the hearing. Most committee hearings are held in public and anyone is welcome to come and listen.
