National Apology to Victims and Survivors of Institutionalised Child Sexual Abuse

22 October 2018

Prime Minister Scott Morrison apologises on behalf of the nation.

On behalf of the Australian Government and all Australians, Prime Minister Scott Morrison apologised to the victims and survivors, their families, supporters and all those affected by institutional abuse. It recognised the immense hurt and trauma suffered by Australians.

The Apology was developed by an independent, survivor-focused group in collaboration with communities around Australia. It acknowledged the failures by governments, faith-based organisation and community groups to keep children safe.

The National Apology was part of the Australian Government’s response to the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

Today, we reckon with our past and commit to protect children now and into the future. Today, we apologise for the pain, suffering and trauma inflicted upon victims and survivors as children, and for its profound and ongoing impact.
