‘Too much to bear’

Clearing of koala habitat would be banned if a newly introduced private senator’s bill becomes a law.

Feb 4, 2021

The Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Amendment (Save the Koala) Bill 2021 would stop the government from supporting any decision or development that resulted in the destruction of koala habitat. Introducing the bill to the Senate, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said, ‘Koalas are a national treasure but land clearing in Australia is becoming far too much for them to bear. Unless clearing of koala habitat stops, our beloved native species will soon be extinct.’

The Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Amendment (Save the Koala) Bill 2021 has been referred to the Senate Standing Committee on Environment and Communications. The Committee is accepting submissions until Thursday 8 April.
