‘Literacy is so critical to a young person’s education in Australia. It provides the fundamental base to develop other skills, and the tools to embrace the joy of reading and writing,’ the Prime Minister said.

The spelling bee is an online competition hosted by Kids News and is for students in years 3 to 8. Schools can register through the Kids News website with registrations closing on Friday 5 March.

The spelling bee was initially planned for 2020 and was to be conducted with students in person. It was delayed until 2021 and moved to an online format because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
