The Prime Minister, the Hon Scott Morrison MP said that the change ‘was made for all Australians’, and that ‘while Australia as a modern nation may be relatively young, our country’s story is ancient, as are the stories of the many First Nations peoples whose stewardship we rightly acknowledge and respect’.

This was the first proclamation by a Governor-General about the national anthem since 1984, when Advance Australia Fair officially replaced the previous anthem God Save the Queen. Advance Australia Fair had previously been chosen by as the national anthem by the Australian people in a National Song Poll.
