In addition to banning the export of some recyclable materials, including mixed plastics, tyres, paper and cardboard, the Recycling and Waste Reduction Bill 2020 and related bills will:
- encourage industries to take responsibility for the waste they create
- require the government to make a yearly statement to Parliament about the progress of recycling in Australia
- help to create a circular economy in Australia, where more materials are reused and recycled.
Introducing the bills into the House of Representatives, the Minister for the Environment, the Hon Sussan Ley MP, said, ‘Waste is not just an environmental problem to solve, it is an economic opportunity to create.’
