On 24 October 1945 Australia became a founding member of the United Nations.

The Communist Party Dissolution Act came into effect on 20 October 1950. The Act dissolved the Communist Party of Australia and excluded suspected communists from working in the public service and running for office. The High Court of Australia later ruled the Act unconstitutional and a referendum on the question was narrowly defeated.
