The Australian Parliament was broadcast on the radio for the first time on 8 May 1945. Regular broadcasts on the ABC began in 1946.

8 May 1970 saw the beginning of the Vietnam Moratorium campaign. Over 200 000 people took part in rallies in May and September 1970 and June 1971. The goal of the protestors was to end the Vietnam War and stop the conscription—compulsory military service—of Australians.

On 25 May 1995 the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly passed a bill legalising euthanasia. The law was later overturned by the Australian Parliament.
