Senate appoints COVID-19 Select Committee

A select committee was formed to inquire into the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The committee will have 7 senators and will report to the Senate by 30 June 2022. The committee can still operate when the Parliament is not sitting.

Parliament has reduced its number of sitting days, which reduces the opportunities that members of parliament have to scrutinise—closely examine—the work of the government. Senator Katy Gallagher told the Senate that this was a reason for forming the committee, stating that the committee would ‘provide the appropriate scrutiny that's needed not just over the next few months but, indeed, over the next 18 months or so.’
