The Prime Minister, the Hon Scott Morrison MP, delivered the annual closing the gap statement in the House of Representatives which outlines the government's progress in improving health, education and other social outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The Prime Minister reported that only two out of seven goals were on track to be met, saying ‘Despite our best intentions, Closing the Gap, as an initiative, fell victim to the same type of thinking that has hampered our efforts in the past.’ He said that future approaches would involve greater partnerships between governments and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples working together to decide future policies, especially at a regional and local level.

In 2008 Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson committed to achieving six—later increasing to seven—goals  aimed at achieving equality of health status and life expectancy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians. Each year the Prime Minister addresses the Parliament to report on the government's progress towards achieving these goals.
