A condolence motion was moved in the House of Representatives and the Senate on the first sitting day of the year. The Prime Minister, the Hon Scott Morrison MP, described it as ‘a season of fire, national in scale’ and paid tribute to ‘remarkable Australians standing by each other’. The Leader of the Opposition, the Hon Anthony Albanese MP, acknowledged volunteer firefighters who ‘keep giving us so much, over such a long time, at such a cost to themselves.’

After the condolence speeches, both the House of Representatives and Senate adjourned as a mark of respect to those who have been affected by the fires.
