The Parliament has passed a bill that will put into effect a number of recommendations from the Royal Commission into institutional responses to child abuse.

Sept 17, 2019

The recommendations being implemented include the introduction of 2 new offences for failing to protect a child at risk of abuse and failure to report child abuse. It also amends the definition of ‘forced marriage’ to include any marriage involving children under the age of 16.

Introducing the Combatting Child Exploitation Legislation Amendment Bill to the House of Representatives, the Minister for Home Affairs, the Hon Peter Dutton MP, said, ‘It is an unfortunate reality that ... predators seek to target the most vulnerable members of society. This behaviour is vile, and we must constantly review our laws to ensure they are well suited to targeting any emerging forms of child ... abuse.’
