When a federal election is called, all bills before the Parliament lapse—are dropped—from the Notice Paper (the document listing all business before the House of Representatives and the Senate). A bill must be restored—reintroduced—in order to be considered again.
The private senator’s bill was introduced by Greens Senator Rachel Siewert and is seeking to increase several social security payments, including Newstart Allowance, Youth Allowance and Austudy.
