The opening of the 46th Parliament

The 46th Parliament opened on 2 July with 45 newly-elected members, including 27 in the House of Representatives and 18 new senators.

The day started with a Welcome to Country in the Great Hall and a smoking ceremony on the Forecourt. The Chief Justice of the High Court, the Honourable Justice Susan Kiefel AC, acting as the Governor-General’s Deputy, then officially opened the Parliament in the Senate chamber and presided over the swearing-in of new senators. High Court Justice the Honourable Stephen Gageler AC presided over the swearing-in of members of the House of Representatives in their chamber. This was followed by the election of the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives in their separate chambers.
