New social media images law

Posting or threatening to post non-consensual, or unapproved, intimate images on social media will be banned, as a result of the Enhancing Online Safety (Non-consensual Sharing of Intimate Images) Bill 2018 passing the Parliament.

Aug 29, 2018

This includes the use of media such as email or text messaging, websites and peer-to-peer file-sharing services. The eSafety Commissioner will handle complaints and enforce a civil penalty system (that is a system where financial penalties for individuals or corporations can be handed out).  Criminal offences for sharing of intimate images without consent will also apply.
